A New Muslim Burial Area PDF Print E-mail

Introduction

Two hundred and fifty-six plots have been allocated in a specially designated area within St. James Cemetery at Chetwynd, Bandon Road, Cork for Muslim Burial. All the plots are built in accordance with Islamic laws. This page provides information about the new cemetery and a guide for what to do in case of someone passed away.

St. James Cemetery

This lawn cemetery is built on a site of 7.4 hectares (approximately 18 acres) and is located at Chetwynd, Bandon Road (N71), Cork. The site will provide approximately 10,000 grave plots and is likely to have plots for sale for approximately 60 years.

The cemetery has the capacity for a total of 6,000 plots, of which 2,500 are ready for sale. The internal avenues are lined with trees to create a formal setting. Less formal landscaping is provided around the perimeter of the site to create a peaceful environment and a sense of enclosure.

Purchasing Plots

Burial grounds (cemeteries) in Ireland are the responsibility of the local authorities, who operate many of them and appoint a registrar or caretaker for each of their burial ground to manage the sale of plots in that site, and in some cases to maintain the burial ground.

The plots can be purchased in advance through Cork County Council. The first step in this process is to contact the Registrar of the cemetery who will arrange to complete the allocation forms. The Registrar can be contacted on 0868063981.

It is important to point out that many burial grounds or graveyards in Ireland are already full, and many local authorities place restrictions on the pre-purchase or buying in advance of burial plots, such as limiting advance buying to those over 65 years of age.
