The official launch of the IRCHSS project ‘The History of Islam in Ireland’ at University College Cork

The Study of Religions Department at the College of Arts at University College Cork has the pleasure to launch a new research project on the history of Islam in Ireland, funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS). The launch took place on the UCC campus (Boole Lecture Theatre 3) on 27 October 2009 at 7pm.

Foreign minister Micheál Martin TD will also attend the launch and will give an address to the attendees.

As guest speaker, Prof Peter Antes of the University of Hannover (Germany) has been invited. He is an international expert in the Study of Religions, who has undertaken research on Islam in Europe and will give a guest lecture on this occasion.

The aim of this project is to provide an in-depth survey of the Muslim community in Ireland, its establishment and historical evolution, its various organisations and mosques and its current and future place in Irish society.
